The United States Military and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) this week conducted a joint exercise of an advanced X-Band radar missile detection system, The Jerusalem Post reported. The powerful radar system, located in southern Israel, gives the IDF additional time to track and destroy incoming missiles. The United States deployed the system in Israel last October in an effort to fortify Israeli defenses in face of Iran’s nuclear program and growing ballistic missile capabilities. The United States and Israel are set to hold another joint exercise in October to improve interoperability between two other American systems that will deploy alongside Israel’s Arrow missile defense system. Missile defense has been the cornerstone of a decades-long strategic relationship between the United States and Israel.
