Hizballah rockets can reach
deep into Israel and strike
major population centers.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Tuesday accused Syria of arming the Lebanon-based terrorist army Hizballah with dangerous new weapons, The Washington Post reported. “I would just say that from our vantage point, Syria and Iran are providing Hizballah with rockets and missiles of ever-increasing capability,” Secretary Gates said. “And we are at a point now where Hizballah has far more rockets and missiles than most governments in the world. And this is obviously destabilizing for the whole region.” A Pentagon report on Iran released last week said that Hizballah had rearmed itself to beyond the levels seen before the 2006 war, despite U.N.-backed efforts to curb weapon shipments to the group. In addition to arms, Iran provides about $100 million to $200 million per year to support Hizballah, the report said.
