(CNSNews.com) – Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R.-Ga.) has moved past former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cain to become the top choice for president among Republican primary voters who describe themselves as Tea Party supporters, according to a CBS News poll released today.

In the new poll, conducted Nov. 6-10, 21 percent of Republican primary voters who say they are Tea Party supporters said Gingrich was their choice. 19 percent said their choice was Cain, and 11 percent said their choice was Romney.

That represents a shift in Tea Party sentiments as measured by the last CBS News poll, which was release on Oct. 25. Then Cain, with 32 percent, was the top choice of Republican primary voters who said they were Tea Party supporters, while Romney was second with 18 percent and Gingrich was third with 15 percent.

According to this CBS poll, Gingrich has gained 6 points among Tea Party supporters since Oct. 25 and Cain has lost 13 points.

The CBS News poll did not have a large sample. It was based on interviewing 1,029 registered voters nationwide, among whom were 382 who said they planned to vote in the Republican primary. CBS said the poll’s margin of error among Republican primary voters was plus or minus five points and could be higher for subgroups among Republican primary voters.
