Woodward: Obama Must Respond to ISIS ‘Wake-Up Call’

The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, who has chronicled U.S. military action in Iraq for years, said today that America and the world are in “a mess” in the fight against the Islamic State, the brutal terrorist group also called ISIS or ISIL.

President Obama “has clearly gone through a wake-up call,” Woodward told host Chris Wallace on “Fox News Sunday,” adding: “He’s got to come up with something to do here that’s going to work.”

Otherwise, the veteran investigative reporter said, “a calamity” could occur. Wallace did not ask Woodward what he meant.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that ISIS is winning and will continue to do so unless the president allows more U.S. troops on the ground to make airstrikes in Iraq and Syria more effective.

“They’re winning, and we’re not,” McCain said, adding of those directly confronting the terrorist group: “The Iraqis are not winning. The Peshmerga, the Kurds, are not winning.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said on the same program that America must not be “sucked into a quagmire.” He said Saudi Arabia and other Muslim nations have a responsibility to get “deeply involved” in defeating ISIS, which is made up of radical Sunni jihadists.

“This is not just an American problem. This is an international crisis. This is a regional crisis,” Sanders said. “This is a war for the soul of Islam, and the Muslim nations must be deeply involved.”
