(CNSNews.com) – When former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was asked today at the National Press Club whether the consensus was right or wrong that he would not run for president in 2012, Giuliani replied: “How do I know?”

“I don’t know the answer to that. I decided to put it off about three weeks ago as we got closer to September 11th because it didn’t seem to me that it was right to answer questions like that then, “Giuliani said.

The former Republican presidential candidate said he would, “very much like to see a change of direction in our country” and admitted he thought he would have difficult time gaining the Republican presidential nomination.

“I think if I were to run I would have a chance of winning the presidency, a chance, nobody ever knows. But I would have a hard time getting nominated. I am a realist and I understand how the primary system works,” Giuliani said.

While admitting it would be a difficult presidential bid, Giuliani fell short of ruling himself out of the 2012 race, “I would like to see if there’s somebody that emerges that I think would be a strong candidate in the Republican Party for president. If somebody does emerge that I believe can win than I would probably support that person and if I think we’re truly desperate, I may run.”
