Number of Unemployed Women Increased in July by 227,000

( – The number of unemployed women 16 years and over increased by 227,000 in July as the unemployment rate for women ticked up from 5.9 percent to 6.2 percent, according to data released today from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In July there were 4,494,000 women who were unemployed, an increase of 227,000 from June, when 4,267,000 women were unemployed. A person is counted as unemployed by the BLS if they say they did not have a job during the month but they were actively seeking one.

While the number of unemployed women increased, the number of employed women decreased from 68,568,000 women in June to 68,486,000 in July, a one-month drop of 82,000. A person is considered employed if they had a job during the month.

The unemployment rate for women in July increased from 5.9 percent in June to 6.2 percent in July.

While the metrics for unemployed and employed women worsened over the month, the participation rate and the number of women in the labor force improved slightly in July.

The participation rate, which is the percentage of women who participated in the labor force by either having a job during the month or actively seeking one, increased from 56.8 percent in June to 56.9 percent in July. Similarly, the number of women not in the labor force, or those who either did not have a job nor actively sought one, decreased from 55,299,000 in June to 55,256,000 in July, a decrease of 43,000.
