Arkansas, Utah Become the Latest States to Defund Planned Parenthood

Arkansas and Utah have become the fourth and fifth states to block or partially block taxpayer dollars from going to Planned Parenthood, following a series of undercover videos depicting senior executives discussing prices for fetal body parts.

Planned Parenthood spokespersons have condemned the Center for Medical Progress, the pro-life organization behind the videos, as “anti-choice extremists” and the videos as “heavily edited.”

Profiting from the sale of human organs, including fetal human organs, is illegal in the United States.

The Daily Signal previously reported that Alabama, Louisiana, and New Hampshire have cut taxpayer funding to the organization following the release of the videos.

On Friday, the governor of Arkansas directed the state to end its Medicaid contracts with Planned Parenthood, and the governor of Utah ordered the state to stop distributing funds to the organization.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican, said in a statement that he has directed the state’s Department of Human Services to end its contracts with the organization.

“It is apparent that after the recent revelations on the actions of Planned Parenthood, that this organization does not represent the values of the people of our state and Arkansas is better served by terminating any and all existing contracts with them. This includes their affiliated organization, Planned Parenthood of Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma,” Hutchinson said.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican, also announced Friday that he had directed the state’s Department of Health to cease funding Planned Parenthood.

In a statement provided to Salt Lake City’s FOX 13 News, Herbert said:

The allegations against Planned Parenthood are deeply troubling. Current Utah state law prohibits the use of state funds to provide abortions by Planned Parenthood or any other organization. The federal government has provided grants to Planned Parenthood, distributed through the Utah Department of Health. These funds are also prohibited from being used to perform abortions. In light of ongoing concerns about the organization, I have instructed state agencies to cease acting as an intermediary for pass-through federal funds to Planned Parenthood.

According to the Montgomery Advertiser newspaper, state officials have been told by the Obama administration that cutting funding for Planned Parenthood may be in violation of federal law.

“Longstanding Medicaid laws prohibit states from restricting individuals who have coverage through Medicaid from receiving care from a qualified provider,” a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement. “By restricting which provider a woman could choose to receive care from, women could lose access to critical preventive care, such as cancer screenings.”

State officials have argued that there are numerous other providers where individuals with Medicaid coverage may receive care.

According to a map released by Alliance Defending Freedom and the Charlotte Lozier Institute, “there are currently 13,540 clinics providing comprehensive health care for women, versus 665 Planned Parenthood locations,” reported The Daily Signal’s Kelsey Harkness.

Sarah Torre, a policy analyst at The Heritage Foundation, wrote in a recent op-ed that “Congress is not bound by those regulations and can determine which providers are ‘qualified’ to perform the services covered under the entitlement program.”

“Planned Parenthood does not have a right to the hard-earned money of American taxpayers,” Torre wrote.

  1. It’s up to the states! If not for the states, we’d all be mired in the Commie zeal of the congressional Democrats on their dedicated course to gut the Constitution, and the cowardice of those “Republican” leaders of Congress who do their utmost to block true Conservatives of Congress. Both of those parties have corrupted the federal government for too long. The possibility now exists to do away with both if we stay the course for conservative, constitutional, federal government.
Republican leadership of Congress is not enough measured by its majority. The “Washington” career establishment RINOS must be ousted never to return. They are partners with the Commie Democrats in their dedication to undermine conservatism. To the Commies and RINOS, it’s a matter of “protecting” what they construe as their rightful turf in the nation’s capitol. They jealously guard their “turf” in their fear that where conservatism is alive and well, neither Commie-Democrats, nor RINOS can exist. Well, they shouldn’t anyway if government is to be true to the people who voted for it. Washington, DC is presently nothing but a damaging charade.
The present career Washington political establishment, which includes their lobbyists who milk the entire federal system, must be sent packing or we’ll never return to governance which adheres to the U.S. Constitution.
