Nobel Institute’s incomplete timeline damages Einstein’s reputation

Nobel Prize Official Website excludes key information in Einstein’s Theory of Relativity Timeline
by Ezequiel Doiny
The Nobel Institute’s incomplete timeline of the development of the General Theory of Relativity damages Einstein’s reputation by excluding some key information.
This is what nobelprize.org writes in Einstein’s General Relativity timeline “1915 – On November 25, nearly ten years after the foundation of special relativity, Einstein submitted his paper The Field Equations of Gravitation for publication, which gave the correct field equations for the theory of general relativity (or general relativity for short). Actually, the German mathematician David Hilbert submitted an article containing the correct field equations for general relativity five days before Einstein. Hilbert never claimed priority for this theory.”

Because some key information is missing, the way it is phrased sounds like Hilbert was the one who deserves credit for the General Theory of Relativity. A student or researcher who knows nothing else would be misled by the statement above.

Nobelprize.org does not mention the fact that Einstein and Grossman published a paper in 1913 describing an early version of the Theory of General Relativity. Nobelprize.org also excludes the fact that Hilbert attended Einstein’s lecture in 1915 where he learned about Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity for the first time. “The collaboration between Grossmann and Einstein led to the first paper on the general theory of relativity in 1913. It was Entwurf einer verallgemeinerten Relativitätsheorie und einer Theorie der Gravitation published in the Zeitschrift für Mathematik und Physik. In one sense it is a joint paper but in another sense it consists of two separate papers, the first 22 pages being ‘Physikalischer Teil’ by Einstein and the next 16 pages being ‘Mathematischer Teil’ written by Grossmann. Also in 1913 Grossmann published Mathematische Begriffsbildungen zur Gravitationstheorie. He continued to collaborate with Einstein and they published another joint paper in 1914, namely Kovarianzeigenschaften der Feldgleichungen…In 1910, Grossmann co-founded the Swiss Mathematical Society along with Rudolf Fueter, professor of mathematics at the University of Basel, and Henri Fehr (1870-1954), professor for algebra and higher geometry at the University of Geneva. Fueter was the first president (1910-12), Fehr the second president (1913-15) and Grossmann the third president (1916-17). ”

Any timeline of the development of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity should also include:

“1905 – Einstein publishes “On the Electrodynamics of moving bodies” which includes the Special Theory of Relativity. Einstein publishes a paper on the Special Theory of Relativity

1913- Einstein and Grossman publish an early version of the General Theory of relativity

1914-1915 – Einstein presents 4 important lectures in the Prussian Academy of Sciences that describe his work on the General Theory of Relativity

1915 – David Hilbert attends Einstein’s lecture in Gottinghen and hears about the concept of General Relativity for the first time

October 1915 – Einstein finds his own mistake in the paper he published in 1913

November 4, 1915 – Einstein corrects his mistake and announces at the Prussian Academy that the mistake he and Grossman made has been rectified. He is close to complete the General Theory of Relativity

November 18, 1915 – Einstein uses the Equations from the General Theory of Relativity to explain the anomalous motion of the planet Mercury (something Newton’s Theory could not explain)

November 20, 1915 – David Hilbert publishes his own version of the General Theory of Relativity

November 25, 1915 – Einstein presents to the Prussian Academy the Final form of the Field Equations for the General Theory of Relativity”

Please compare the timeline above with what the Nobel Institute published in its website “…Actually, the German mathematician David Hilbert submitted an article containing the correct field equations for general relativity five days before Einstein…”

What the Nobel Institute published is misleading…Please write to nobelprize.org and ask them to add the missing information in Einstein’s timeline.
