51% Say Transgenders Should Be Required to Use the Restroom That Corresponds With Their Birth Gender

A small majority of Americans 18 and older believe that transgenders should be required to use the restroom that corresponds with their “birth gender,” according to a survey conducted by Gallup.

From May 15-30, Gallup asked 1,017 adults: “In terms of policies governing public restrooms, do you think these policies should require transgender individuals to use the restroom that corresponds to their birth gender or should these policies allow transgender individuals to use the restroom that correspond to their gender identity?”

Fifty-one percent said, transgenders should be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with their birth gender; 44 percent said they should be allowed to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity; and 5 percent had no opinion.

Views on this issue varied by party affiliation and philosophy. Seventy-eight percent of Republicans said that transgenders should be required ot use the restroom that corresponds with their birth gender, but only 50 percent of Independents and 27 percent of Democrats took that position.

Seventy-six percent of conservatives said that transgenders should be required to use the restroom that corresponds with their birth gender, but only 44 percent of moderates and 27 percent of liberals took that position.

According to this Gallup survey, 21 percent of conservatives say that transgenders should be allowed to use the restroom that corresponds with their gender identity, as do 49 percent of moderates, and 70 percent of liberals.
