White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement that the U.S. condemns the attacks and hopes those responsible will be brought to justice.

We condemn the brutal terrorist attacks in southern Israel today in the strongest terms, Carney said. Our deepest condolences go to the victims, their families and loved ones, and we wish those injured a speedy recovery. The U.S. and Israel stand united against terror and we hope that those behind this attack will be brought to justice swiftly.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton added, This violence only underscores our strong concerns about the security situation in the Sinai Peninsula. Recent commitments by the Egyptian government to address the security situation in the Sinai are important and we urge the Egyptian government to find a lasting resolution.

The Sinai Peninsula has been in a state of chaos since the uprising in Egypt that resulted in the ousting of former President Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian armys started this week Operation Eagle  in the Sinai, which is aimed at hunting down terrorists hiding in the region.

Around 1,000 soldiers and policemen forces were deployed last Friday and Saturday in the northern Sinai to carry out the operation.

Defense minister Ehud Barak said Thursday he is pushing for faster completion of the Israel-Egypt border fence following the terror attacks.
